The holidays are coming fast. Between family visits, dinners and overnight guests, most of us want the house looking its best without spending every weekend scrubbing.

We were recently featured in Barb Cooper’s Redfin blog post, 10 Tips to Declutter Your Home Before the Holidays, where I shared one of the most important tips we give our clients: declutter before you deep clean. It sounds simple, but it changes everything.

Why Declutter First?

Cleaning around clutter takes twice as long and never looks quite finished. Dust hides under stacks of mail, crumbs collect behind countertop appliances, and floors never get fully mopped when items are sitting on them. Clear the surfaces first, and every cleaning step after that is faster and more thorough.

Start in the Kitchen

The kitchen works the hardest during the holidays, so start there:

  • Clear the countertops. Put away small appliances you won’t use this season.

  • Toss expired food from the pantry, fridge and freezer to make room for holiday groceries.

  • Organize one cabinet at a time. Don’t empty everything at once.

  • Wipe as you go. Once a shelf is empty, give it a quick wipe before restocking.

Then Move Room by Room

Work through the house in the order your guests will see it:

  1. Entryway: shoes, coats and mail pile up fast. Give everything a home.

  2. Living room: clear coffee tables, fold blankets and store toys and electronics.

  3. Guest bedroom and bathroom: clear the nightstands, empty a drawer for guests, and stock fresh towels and toiletries.

  4. Dining room: clear the table completely so it’s ready for meals.

Tip: keep three bags or boxes handy, labeled keep, donate and toss. Decide on each item once, then move on.

Now It’s Time to Deep Clean

With the clutter gone, a deep clean goes much further. That’s when you can reach the places that get skipped during regular cleaning:

  • Baseboards, door frames and light switches

  • Inside the microwave, oven and refrigerator

  • Cabinet fronts and handles

  • Ceiling fans, vents and light fixtures

  • Bathroom grout, fixtures and glass

  • Floors edge to edge, including under furniture
